Burning WoW Officially Closed – Belveridius

It’s official folks.

Burning WoW is closing its doors for good.

Several private servers were notified that if they did not cease and desist all activity on their individual servers immediately, they would be subject to criminal prosecution for violating terms within the DMCA. (Digital Millennium Copyright Act)

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act is a United States copyright law that implements two 1996 treaties of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It criminalizes production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services intended to circumvent measures (commonly known as Digital Rights Management or DRM) that control access to copyrighted works and it also criminalizes the act of circumventing an access control, whether or not there is actual infringement of copyright itself. In addition, the DMCA heightens the penalties for copyright infringement on the Internet. Passed on October 12, 1998 by a unanimous vote in the U.S. Senate and signed into law by President Bill Clinton on October 28, 1998, the DMCA amended Title 17 of the United States Code to extend the reach of copyright, while limiting the liability of the providers of on-line services for copyright infringement by their users.

Based on this this notification, our server manager Kandyman had no other choice but to comply with Blizzard’s demand to shut down Burning WoW immediately.

We know that this comes as a great shock to you all. The BWoW Staff shares your pain. We have all spent countless days, even years for some, on this server we have all grown to love. We have made many friends along the way. So it is with my deepest regret to report this sad news to you.

Please understand that if there was something that could have been done, it would have been done. But we were faced with no other choice.

Burning WoW would like to thank you all for your contributions to our community and for your tremendous support. We wish you happiness and good fortune as we all depart to go our separate ways.

When you look back, remember the good times we shared here. Remember the ups and the downs. There is no pleasure without pain. Remember the challenges you faced. And how you overcame them. Take that with you in life.

Most of all, remember each other. For it was the people who made us what we became. Remember the friendship and love we shared. For they can NEVER take our memories from us.
